SmartCourt is an attempt to automatically collect basketball data with AI technologies. The prototype was built with a camera and computer vision algorithms (ReID for player identification, Yolo v5 for ball detection, Openpose for motion classification). The prototype was initially implemented in 12/2020 with Yuanda Hu. Then the team merged with Zheshi.tech team in 2020 and has launched the App. Recently, we are working with Shanghai Basketball Association and provide data and AR live streaming service to local leagues.
The sport activities we have everyday are becoming more and more socializing and gamifying these days with the fast development of digital wearables and recording devices like Apple watch, Go Pro, etc. As a basketball enthusiast and a trained data analyst, I am wondering what the basketball would be like in the future.
Similar to the running activity, the key step for basketball players to better develop their skills and share their achievement is to monitor their performance with quantitative data and videos, which is currently missing at the amateur level. We hope to develop a new affordable basketball court infrastructure with computer vision technologies to fill the void of basketball data collection APPs.
I prototyped this SmartCourt with Dr.Yuanda Hu in 12/2020 and we planned to design a product for the chain basketball court brand in China. But later, I was introduced to ZHESHI team after meeting several angel investors. ZHESHI is working on a similar product and CEO Chao Li kindly asked me to join the team to work together. I was mainly responsible for product management as the product director in ZHESHI team and helped ZHESHI build products for Shanghai Basketball Association.
